Lessons from the January 12th Earthquake and its Aftershocks

The Department of Geography and Geology, UWI, Mona, the Disaster Risk Reduction Centre (DRRC) along with the Jamaica Geographical Society(JGS) and the Geological Society of Jamaica(GSJ) will host a seminar titled, “Lessons from the January 12th Port-au-Prince Earthquake and its Aftershocks.” The seminar takes place on Saturday, March 12, 2010 at 9 am at the Inter-Faculty Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona. The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Grenville Draper from the Department of Earth and Environment, Florida International University, on the topic, “Tectonics and seismic risk along the Caribbean-North American Plate Boundary: The vulnerability of Jamaica, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico”.
Presenters and panelists on the occasion will include include local specialists in Regional Tectonics, Earthquake Engineering Seismologists, Health Sector and Risk Reduction.
The seminar is designed to provide the general public, concerned stakeholders and professional organisations with an opportunity to be informed of the current state of knowledge, lessons learnt and actions underway related the Earthquake Risk in Jamaica and the Greater Antilles.
The university community and the public are invited.
