UWI lecturer and founder/ coordinator of UWI Violence Prevention Programme (UWIVPP), Dr. Claudette Crawford-Brown recently participated in a Handing Over Ceremony for the Safe Schools for Learning Project which is directed by the Ministry of Education. Dr. Crawford-Brown has developed the Anger Management and Conflict Resolution package, with the technical assistance of UNICEF, to be used in the Safe Schools for Learning Project.
This project which was implemented in phases has now been introduced to over 40 targeted schools in Jamaica. The first phase involved the training of 150 principals, guidance counselors and teachers led by Dr. Crawford-Brown and a team of clinical social work graduates of the UWI, in October 2009. The second phase of the Project involves the distribution of materials developed to schools. The package consists of: three manuals on Anger management, Peer Mediation and Parenting, 3 sets of age-appropriate workbooks, posters, flashcards and storybooks which were designed using specific themes across three age groups, namely 5 -7 years, 8-11 years and 12 & over.
The project involves the UWIVPP, working in partnership with UNICEF, the Ministry of Education as well as the Dispute Resolution Foundation, which is responsible for monitoring implementation and evaluation of the impact of the package, and ASHE, a professional performing arts ensemble which is being used by the ministry as a means of reinforcing the psycho-educational aspects of the project.
