Confucius Institute Unveiling at UWI, Mona
The Unveiling of the Plaque of the Confucius Institute at the UWI, Mona will take place on Monday, July 19, 2010. The Institute will operate in partnership with the Taiyuan University of Technology in China.
The Confucius Institute is the first of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean. It is a non-profit educational institution, which seeks to promote Chinese language and culture, and supports local Chinese teaching internationally, through affiliated Confucius Institutes. There are more than 300 Confucius institutes worldwide which seek to strengthen educational cooperation with China, develop Chinese language education and increase intercultural understanding with the People of China. The network has developed in collaboration with the Chinese Language International Council (Hanban) in Beijing, a branch of the Chinese Ministry of Education. Establishment of the Confucius Institute at Mona is part of an initiative to strengthen educational cooperation between China and Jamaica.
