Anthropology Day at UWI Celebrates Caribbean Rhythms, Heritage and Resistance

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work stages the third annual Anthropology Day under the theme Caribbean Rhythms: Cultural Heritage and Resistance in the Caribbean. The day’s activities take place on Friday October 15, 2010 starting at 10 am at the Undercroft.
This year, Anthropology Day will explore cultural heritage and resistance through the lens of performance, from drumming, to dance, to martial arts. There will be demonstrations of capoeira, the Brazilian martial art, African drumming and Jamaican folk and contemporary dance. Additionally presentations will be made by cultural experts such as L'Antoinette Stines and Dr. Erna Brodber of UWI, Mona along with other representatives from the UWI, UNESCO and the Edna Manley School of Dance on the cultural practices in the Caribbean and to the history of Caribbean peoples, their struggles and triumphs.
