“Women and Leadership”

The Institute for Gender and Development Studies at UWI hosts a public lecture entitled, “Women and Leadership in Ghana” on Monday, October 25, 2010 at 5 pm at the Multifunctional Room, Rex Nettleford Hall, UWI, Mona. The lecture will be delivered by Professor  Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Ghana.

The Lecture will provide a historical overview of the contributions of selected African women leaders both on the continent and in the Diaspora to the cause of African empowerment. It will further interrogate the more recent social and political developments that explain the current, near invisibility of women in positions of authority in Africa. Using Ghana as a case study, the presentation outlines the dynamics of pre and post European style education, evaluates their varying degrees of success or lack thereof, at promoting the leadership of women in Africa. The premise of the presentation is that the seeming powerlessness of African women is a recent social creation that is amenable to change.

The university community, senior high school students and the public are invited.
