19th Annual Medical Sciences Conference Explores Infectious Diseases

“Infectious Diseases: Old Foes, New Enemies, And Future Threats” is the theme of the 19th annual Faculty of Medical Sciences Research Conference scheduled to take place on November 10-12, 2010. The Conference begins with an Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 5:30 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre during which the Distinguished Kenneth Standard Lecture will be delivered. The Lecture will be delivered by Professor Ian Poxton, Professor of Medical Microbiology, University of Edinburgh.

The Conference continues over two days with poster and oral presentations and a workshop session with local and regional experts at the Mona Visitors' Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona. A wide range of topics will be explored at the Conference including Malaria, Obesity in Adolescent, Depression, Lead poisoning in children, Leptospirosis, Biological Weapons and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Cervical Cancer.   

The Conference is designed to showcase the research conducted by the Faculty of Medical Sciences and share findings with various key stakeholders in a bid to inform and influence best practices and governmental and non-governmental policies in the field of infectious diseases. It will also serve as a forum to sensitize the public of the importance of prevention and treatment of infectious diseases and to highlight innovative practices to medical practitioners.
