Black Op: Raising Barry Chevannes Higher- A Tribute to Professor Chevannes

The University of the West Indies, Mona invites members of the university community and the wider public to attend an evening of tributes and cultural items in celebration of the life of the late Professor Emeritus Alston “Barry” Chevannes to be held on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 5:30 pm. in the Oriental Gardens, next to the Mona Visitors’ Lodge on the Campus.

Black Op: Raising Barry Chevannes Higher will include tributes from a number of the organisations with which Professor Chevannes was associated, including the University Township Project, The UWI Institute of Gender and Development, the UWI Centre for Caribbean Thought,  Fathers Inc, Children First, Theatre Group for National Liberation, and the Theocracy Reign Order of the Nyahbinghi. Tributes will also come from individuals impacted by Professor Chevannes, including his academic and religious colleagues, the Revival community, young people whom he mentored, vendors from Coronation Market and Cultural Studies students.

A number of cultural artistes will also perform in their own tribute to the late anthropologist.  Performers include Tony Rebel, Yasus Afari, the L’Acadco Dance Company as well as trumpeter, David Madden. The evening will end with drumming by the Theocracy Reign Order of the Nyahbinghi, Philip Supersad and the Mystic Revelation of Rastafari.

The university community and the public are invited to attend.
