University Township Project Inaugural Tree Lighting Ceremony

The Township Project aims to consolidate the University’s efforts in community development and involves the use of UWI resources to promote educational development, skills training, health and nutrition, culture and sports in the greater August Town community. Already, basic schools in some of the communities and computer facilities in some schools have been upgraded and scholarships awarded to students and teachers from the August Town area. Training is also underway in collaboration with the HEART Trust/NTA and UWI, Mona converted one of its football fields as the home-ground for the August Town Football Club. Assistance is also being provided for an Ornamental Fish Farming initiative.
The tree lighting ceremony is part of the deepening of the relationship with the greater August Town community while the unveiling of Professor Chevannes’ portrait acknowledges the pivotal role which he played as Chairman and Advisor to the Township Project.
