Talking Rhythm, Stressing Tone
Curious about the rhythm and music of people’s speech and the way that the beat varies depending on where you are from? Always wondered about the tone of Caribbean pronunciations of the word ‘table’ compared with that of ‘cable’? Arawak Publications and the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, UWI will launch a book, Talking Rhythm, Stressing Tone: The Role of Prominence in Anglo-West African Creole Languages’ by Hubert Devonish, Professor of Linguistics, at the Neville Hal Lecture Theatre, Faculty of the Humanities and Education, UWI at 6:00 p.m. Friday April 25. The author will do a multimedia presentation on the subject of his book aimed at all persons interested in Caribbean language and speech.
