Research Day 2011

The University of the West Indies, Mona will host its annual Research Day on January 27-28, 2011. Dr. Christopher Tufton, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries will be the guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony which takes place on Thursday, January 27, 2011 starting at 9 am at the Undercroft. This year’s Research Day is focused on the theme of Supporting the Agriculture Sector through Teaching Research, and Entrepreneurship. Research day will also feature the Grace/UWI Agriculture Schools’ Challenge Quiz on Thursday, January 27 at 10:45 am at the Undercroft. The Quiz will feature the three schools that participated in the Grace/ UWI Agriculture Championship namely: Papine High, Ardenne High and Oberlin High. 

Also following on the Opening Ceremony on January 27 at 11 am will be the launch of the book, Physical Impacts by Recent Hurricanes on the Coast of Jamaica authored by Mrs. Shakira Khan-Butterfield, Research Associate and Professor Edward Robinson, Director, Marine Geology Unit, UWI. The Launch takes place at at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. Two more books will be launched during Research Day through the School of Education. The books are: Between Two Grammars authored by Dr. Beverley Bryan, Senior Lecturer and Head, Department of Educational Studies and Jamaican Gold Jamaican Sprinters by Dr. Rachel Irving, Lecturer, Basic Medical Sciences and Ms. Vilma Charlton, Lecturer, Institute of Education. The Launch takes place at on Thursday, January 27 at 2:30 pm. 

Additionally the annual American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ)/ Cobb Family Lecture titled “Ganja: Legalize or Not Legalize” will be delivered by Dr. Wendel Abel, Lecturer, Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, UWI, Mona. The Lecture takes place on Thursday, January 27, 20111 at 5:30 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. On Friday, January 28 at 9 am at the Undercroft there will also be a public Lecture delivered by Dr. Claudette Crawford-Brown, Lecturer, Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, UWI, Mona. Her Lecture is entitled, “Violence and the Jamaican Child: A Call to Action.”

Research Day 2011 will also include exhibitions and presentations on the various areas of research in which UWI is engaged. Additionally campus tours, seminars, demonstrations, poster display and video presentations will be conducted. Research day culminates with an Awards Ceremony which recognizes outstanding research in a range of areas.
