UWI Lecturer Explores ‘Man Vibes’ in the Jamaican Dancehall in New Book

The Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS) at the UWI, Mona will host the launch of the book “Man Vibes:  Masculinities in the Jamaican Dancehall” authored by Dr. Donna P. Hope, Senior Lecturer in the Institute.  The launch takes place on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 6 p.m. at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.  Clyde McKenzie will be the main speaker.

The book explores the expressions of Jamaican masculinities within the popular cultural space of the male-dominated dancehall employing both a personal, ethnographic and anthropological perspective in auditing the history of dancehall. The book simultaneously is a celebration of the marginalized and a challenge to social inequality in which Hope delineates a path through the expression of the multifaceted male self that is evident in dancehall.  Man Vibes highlights five prominent masculine debates in dancehall.

The university community and the public are invited to attend the launch. The Launch will be followed by a book signing by the author. Copies of the book, Man Vibes will be sold at a discounted price at the launch.  For more details interested persons may telephone 970-6228 or 977-1951.
