Kenneth Ingram Lecture

The UWI, Mona and the National Library of Jamaica will host the second Kenneth Ingram Memorial Lecture on Thursday, March 03, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.  Professor Margaret Rouse-Jones, Historian, Caribbean scholar and former University Librarian (1981-2008) will deliver a lecture entitled, History at the personal level: Tesserae in the Mosaic of Caribbean Social History.

The lecture will demonstrate how a variety of source materials might be used creatively in the study of lives of individuals.  Examples will show how a book collection, primary sources, oral history records, and other forms of cultural heritage materials, might be used in the crafting of biographical studies.  It will highlight the importance of our unique Caribbean resources in pushing the frontiers of knowledge and the librarian’s role in providing appropriate access to its content.

The event is part of the University’s efforts to honour the late Kenneth Ingram, University Librarian from 1971 to 1981 for his contribution as a librarian and scholar and for his work in the development of historical sources in the Caribbean. Additionally, the University through the support of 3M InterAmerica Inc (Jamaica Division) and UWI Development and Endowment Fund (UWIDEF) awarded the 3M/Kenneth Ingram/UWIDEF scholarship valued at $720,000 over three (3) years tenable at the Department of Library and Information Studies to pay tribute to Kenneth Ingram for his contribution. This scholarship is a part of the MOU between the entities.

The event is expected to be of particular interest to social historians, librarians, documentalists, and biographers. All are invited to attend.
