Reggae Artiste, Vybz Kartel Featured at Public Forum at UWI, Mona

The Department of Literatures in English and the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) Mona Unit UWI, Mona are co-hosting a public forum in which Adidja ‘Vybz KarteI’ Palmer will deliver the main presentation. The event takes place on Thursday, March 10 at 7 p.m. at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.  Kartel’s presentation is entitled, “‘Pretty as a Colouring Book’:  My Life and My Art.”

His presentation will provide an opportunity for the UWI to demonstrate its leadership role in engaging public debate on issues of colour, class and gender as manifested in Jamaican popular music. Kartel, who thrives on controversy, is expected to deliver a provocative talk on skin bleaching.

The event is a part of the effort of the Departments to create an atmosphere in which the academy and the practitioners of popular culture especially in music can interact and discuss topical issues.

The university community and the public are invited to attend. Admission is free.
