UWI, Mona Hosts History CAPE Lecture Series

Caribbean History students and teachers at the sixth form level are expected to participate in the annual History Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Lecture Series organized by The Department of History and Archaeology at UWI, Mona. The Lecture Series is scheduled for April 9 and 16 at 10 am at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1 ) in the Faculty of Humanities & Education, UWI, Mona. The Lecture Series will cover select topics from the Unit One (1) and Unit Two Syllabi. The Unit One Lecture Series will address four topics namely: Nineteenth Century Protests, Chinese and Portuguese Immigration, From Tainos to the 1900’s and Haiti 1804 – 1825.  While the Unit Two Series will cover the following topics: European Settlements and Rivalry in the Americas to 1800, Concepts of European Enlightenment: ideas and significance, The Industrial Revolution in England and Brazil: Independence and National Development.

Several UWI, Mona History Lecturers will facilitate the Lecture Series including: Professors Carl Campbell and Patrick Bryan, Drs. Veront Satchell, Jenny Jemmot, Wigmoore Francis, Jonathan Dalby, and Dave Gosse. Ms. Rosalee Grant from the Institute of Jamaica will make also make a presentation titled, “From Tainos to the 1900s:  An Object Centred Approach” at 12:40 on April 9. 

The Lecture Series is designed to provide additional academic support and facilitate further understanding of specific topics for secondary school students sitting CAPE Caribbean History. The book, The Caribbean in the Atlantic World and Global Transformation: Lectures in CAPE History will also be on sale at a cost of $600. The book which was launched last year as part of the Lecture Series features a compilation of contributed essays which are edited by lecturers in the Department, Drs. Jenny Jemmott, Aleric Josephs and Kathleen E. A. Monteith. It covers a significant portion of Units One and Two of the History syllabus, providing important factual information and analysis.
