Congratulations

Four students from the Management Studies Department, Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI, Mona placed third in the Annual Opportunity Funding Corporation Venture Challenge Competition held April 10-13, 2003, at the Omni Hotel, CNN Centre, Atlanta, Georgia in the USA.  The UWI team, Deloree Staple-Chambers, Kurt White, Andrew Barclay and Boysie Barnett, emerged from a field of 16 universities in the competition which was hosted by Clark Atlanta University. For its efforts the team received a cash prize of US$3000.00 and a trophy and was voted the most innovative team of the competition. The then final year students in the Management Information Systems Programme submitted an entry called De’Bak Systems, a computer based venture. De’Bak ‘s flagship product,  Distributed Utilization of CPU Systems (DUCS), harnesses the idle capacity of computers on a network and aggregates this power to give the effect of a ‘virtual  supercomputer’ capable of handling processor intensive activities in a cost effective manner at a much smaller capital outlay than would otherwise be necessary.  The UWI’s team was the only one from overseas and was entering the competition for the second time. Last year it was eliminated in the first round. The Opportunity Funding Corporation Venture Challenge is a not-for-profit corporation which was created in 1970 to facilitate the ownership of for-profit businesses.
