Grade 9 Mathematics Problem Solving Competition

The Department of Educational Studies at UWI, Mona has sought to bring Mathematics to life through a Grade Nine (9) Mathematics Problem Solving Competition which takes place on Thursday, April 14, 2011. The event will begin with an Opening Ceremony at 8:30 am at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona followed by Round One of the Competition at 9 am. During the Problem Solving Competition teachers will be engaged in two workshops lead by UWI, Mona Mathematics experts. The Workshops are aimed at improving the pedagogical aspect of Mathematics Education.

Over fifty secondary schools from across Jamaica are expected to have teams of four participating in the Competition.  The Play –Off of the top five teams will take place at 1 pm at the Multifunctional Room of the Main Library followed by a Presentation Ceremony.

The Competition is designed to encourage grade nine students to develop an appreciation for the subject as a problem solving tool and to recognize its relevance in everyday situations.  In keeping with objective of demonstrating the relevance and application of Mathematics to real life scenarios the students will participate in several demonstrations in Physics, Robotics and a Chemistry Magic show.
