UWI Lecturer Participates in Youth Drama Festival and Master Classes in Singapore

Brian Heap, Senior Lecturer in Drama at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at UWI, Mona recently completed residency in Singapore at the invitation of the Singapore Ministry of Education to participate in the Central Adjudication of English Drama in the Singapore Youth Festival. This Festival serves as a benchmarking exercise for Drama in schools across Singapore and is conducted biennially over a three week period. Mr. Heap was among a panel of five Drama practitioners namely: Dr. Joe Winston, Associate Professor of Drama at the University of Warwick, UK; Ms. Peggy Ferroa, writer and President of the Singapore Drama Educators Association; Mr. Jeremiah Choy, noted Singaporean actor and theatre director; and Ms. Loong May Lin, veteran Singaporean broadcaster and live show promoter. One hundred and twenty five (125) secondary schools presented a twenty (20) minute performance for the adjudication panel.
During his visit to Singapore, Mr. Heap also delivered two Master Classes on Process Drama to teachers, lecturers and arts administrators as part of the 2011 Singapore Arts Festival. This Arts Festival, which is held annually, features a series of performances, workshops and lectures by prominent local and international presenters.
Heap has also served as an adjudicator for the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s National Drama Festival, the Jamaica Secondary Schools Drama Festival, the Trinidad and Tobago Secondary Schools Drama Festival and the Caribbean Regional Secondary Schools Drama Festival.
