SALISES Holds Child’s Rights Workshop for Primary School Teachers

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at UWI, Mona will host a Child’s Rights Workshop for Primary Schools on Thursday, May 26, 2011 starting at 9 am at Seminar Room 10 (SR10), UWI, Mona. Over fifty (50) primary schools from across Jamaica are expected to participate in this Workshop which is expected to bring together over one hundred and eighty (180) teachers and students. The Workshop is designed to train teachers in child rights and research methodologies, promote research among primary school students and increase the adherence to child rights in schools.

This event is one of the precursor activities to the annual Caribbean Child Research Conference. This year’s Conference is being held under the theme, Promoting Child Rights through Equity: Our Children in Post Independence Times. The Conference seeks to ensure children’s participation and to encourage children to conduct research in issues on child rights. Adult researchers also present on this occasion on child rights matters.

The Conference and workshop are organized by SALISES, UWI, Mona in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Environmental Foundation (EFJ), the Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC), UWI, the Early Childhood Commission (ECC), the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), Jamaica’s Office of the Children’s Advocate (OCA), Jamaica’s Office of the Children’s Registry (OCR), the Jamaica Coalition on the Rights of the Child (JCRC), the Jamaica Child Development Agency (CDA), and the Ministry of Education (MoE).
