Seminar at UWI Assesses Jamaica’s Economy

The World Bank and the Department of Economics at UWI, Mona host a dissemination seminar entitled, Jamaica: Country Economic Memorandum (CEM) “Unlocking Growth”. The seminar takes place on Friday, June 17, 2011 at 9:00am in the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona.
Zafer Mustafaoglu, Senior Economist, World Bank will deliver the main address on the Country Economic Memorandum (CEM). The Jamaica CEM assesses the chief economic and social factors that have challenged growth in the Jamaican economy over the past forty years and presents recommendations to unlocking the nation’s growth potential. The report concluded that there is basis for optimism, in that Jamaica has had political stability, high rates of private investment, significant reductions of poverty in rural and urban areas; and improved income distribution. Nonetheless, since independence, the long-term economic growth has underperformed most other countries.
The university community and the public are invited to attend the seminar. For more details contact the Department of Economics at 977-1188.
