The Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MGI), a subsidiary of UWI, Mona will donate a JAMNAV GPS Navigation System to Jamaica Red Cross on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 10 am at the Red Cross National Headquarters located at Central Village, Spanish Town . The JAMNAV unit, the flagship GPS product of MGI, is expected to assist the Red Cross in carrying out its mandate especially in the areas of disaster response and preparedness and search and rescue.  The accuracy in providing directional guidance is expected to support the Red Cross in providing assistance to the most vulnerable in times of crisis especially during times of natural disasters such as hurricanes.

The JAMNAV GPS navigation system has mapped more than 15,000 kilometres of Jamaica's roads covering over 10, 000 Jamaican roadways and featuring 69 categories of interest including: police stations, attractions, banks, post offices, gas stations and restaurants.

The Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MGI) launched the first of its kind in Jamaica Global Positioning System (GPS) Navigation in 2009 and since then has also rolled out JAMNAV Marine which is for offshore use, covering shipping lanes, reefs, cays and other navigational points. The offshore version is targeted primarily to operators of pleasure craft, jet skis, fishing boats and similar users.

The Institute specializes in providing technical and analytical information technology services to UWI, the private and public sector. Its services includes hazards-related and crime fighting consultancies to public sector agencies, as well as directly to central and local government organizations. It is the only organization in Jamaica that can provide advanced geographic information science solutions.
