International Reggae Day Music Symposium Slated for UWI

The UWI, Mona Campus in collaboration with Jamaica Arts Holding (J.A.H.) will host a Reggae Music Symposium on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 6:30 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona. The Symposium is a precursor event in to mark International Reggae Day celebrated on July 1. The event dubbed “Saluting Reggae Vanguards” pays tribute to iconic Reggae artistes who have made noteworthy contributions to Reggae music namely: Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott and Bob Marley.
 
The Symposium will see presentations from UWI academics: Dr. Michael Barnett, Professor Carolyn Cooper, musician, Ibo Cooper, Reggae poet and radio personality, Mutabaruka and Evah Gordon. The presentations will be followed by performances including: Ken Boothe, U Roy, I –Wayne, Jesse Royal among other local artistes.
 
International Reggae Day showcases the best of Jamaica global Reggae and the next generation of music legends while honouring the very best of the culture. This year’s International Reggae Day will be celebrated through several events including a 24 hour online media festival, free Reggae lifestyle parties and television special on TVJ.
