Critical Thinking Teaching Workshop - “The Nuts and Bolts of Learner-Centred Teaching”

If a teacher aspires to teach in ways that promote learning, what does that teacher do about the nuts and bolts of instructional practice? What would that teacher do about tests, papers, lecturing, group work, content and grades while seeking to balance the learning needs of today’s university students with the content and skill demands of degree and professional programmes? How can lecturers promote critical thinking in the midst of such a juggling act?

These questions will be the focus of this interactive workshop on learner-centered teaching as changes in instructional practice are explored to improve students’ learning. The lecture entitled, “The Nuts and Bolts of Learner-Centred Pedagogy that Really Promotes Critical Thinking” is the title of the Workshop led by Dr. Maryellen Weimer, Professor Emerita of Penn State University, Berks, USA. The Workshop scheduled for Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 9 am at the Multifunctional Room, UWI, Mona.

Dr. Weimer is a modern day Guru on Learner-Centered Teaching. Her expertise is evident by her many highly acclaimed published works and in particular the book Learner–Centered Teaching: Five Key Changes to Practice.

The event is organized by the Instructional Development Unit (IDU). Dr. Weimer will deliver this Workshop while in Jamaica for the UWI/ Guardian Life Premium Teaching Lecture. Registration is required to attend. Interested persons may telephone 970-0376 or email idu@uwimona.edu.jm
