15th Annual Bob Marley Lecture

“For the Record: Bob Marley's Island Albums and the 40th Anniversary of Catch a Fire,” is the title of the 15th annual Bob Marley Lecture being staged by the Institute of Caribbean Studies at UWI, Mona. The Lecture will be delivered by Professor Mike Alleyne of the Department of Recording Industry, Middle Tennessee State University. Professor Alleyne’s work in the field includes the publication of many journal articles and book chapters on Caribbean popular music.  The event is set for Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 6:00 p.m in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona.

The Lecture will highlight the importance of aural and visual presentation in establishing the music of Bob Marley & the Wailers as an international reggae phenomenon as exemplified by the Catch a Fire album which was created by Marley and The Wailers, who are legends in their own right. It will expose the ideas and objectives that shaped the creation of a slice of musical history and will also serve to reveal aspects of recording, in studio mixing, packaging and critical reception, all of which played a role in the album’s noted success.

The annual Bob Marley Lecture is designed to honour and celebrate the contribution of Bob Marley and his music and legacy. The Institute also joins in celebrating Reggae month with this event. This year’s Lecture is noteworthy as Jamaica marks the 50th year of independence. It is a time when the nation seeks to acknowledge and celebrate its growth, achievements and icons that have emerged.
