School of Education Hosts Workshop: Insights into Children's Temperament

The School of Education (SOE) will be hosting a two-day professional development workshop for lecturers of teachers colleges and development officers of the Early Childhood Commission (ECC).  This activity will be conducted by INSIGHTS, an intervention developed by New York University which examines children’s temperament and addresses issues related to student disruptive behaviors in the early primary grades.  This concern marks the beginning of a pathway that, for many children, leads progressively to more serious behavioural and academic problems.

The goals of INSIGHTS are to improve children’s behavior and foster their academic and social development.  The workshop will teach educators evidence-based strategies that will enhance their classroom management skills.  The educators will learn how to recognize the different personality styles of their students.  Based on this awareness, they will be able to use the strategy that will be most effective with individual students.  These strategies have been empirically shown to enhance teacher efficacy in classroom management and increase students’ ability to better control their own behavior.

The workshop will be led by Professor Sandee McClowry of New York University and Dr. Mark Spellmann, Clinical Psychologist, New York.
