Government Monthly Seminar – Caribbean and Arab Thoughts Examined

Dr. Elizabeth Kassab, Visiting Professor, Cogut Centre for the Humanities, Brown University will deliver speak at the monthly Departmental/ Graduate Research Seminar organized by the Department of Government, UWI, Mona. Her presentation is entitled, “A Post- Colonial Tragedy of Enlightenment? Some Caribbean and Arab Thoughts”. The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 24, 2012 at 2:30 pm at GLT 1, UWI, Mona.

The presentation is based on Dr. Kassab’s work on contemporary Arab debates on culture and politics, where she will show in what sense contemporary Arab critical thought, and critical post-colonial thought in general can be regarded to be a work of enlightenment. Additionally she will discuss the advantages and problems of such a characterization, and will examine the claims of a “tragedy” of post –colonial enlightenment.
