First International Forensic Medicine Conference Hosted by UWI, Mona

The Department of Pathology, UWI, Mona in collaboration with University of Toronto Centre for Forensic Science and Medicine have organized the first International Forensic Medicine Conference on May 26-27. The two-day Conference which begins at 8 am daily at the Main Medical Lecture Room on the University Hospital of the West Indies Campus (UHWI) will feature local and international experts. 
 
Experts sharing on this occasion include: Dr. Michael Pollanen, keynote speaker and Chief Forensic Pathologist for Ontario, Dr. Rohan Ruwanpura, Senior Forensic Pathologist, Jamaica, Dr. Carolyn Gomes, Executive Director, JFJ, Justice Zaila McCalla, Chief Justice, Jamaica and UWI academics such as Professor Wayne McLaughlin, Dr. Nadia Williams and Dr. Karen Bishop.  The Conference will address two broad areas namely: “Governance and Institutional Building for Forensic Science” and “Forensic Science and Medicine Interfacing with the Criminal Justice System” through panel discussions, presentations and exhibits. 
 
The conference which has the support of the Ministries of Justice and National Security, aims to build the forensic capacity in Jamaica with a view to improving our Social Justice System. 
 
The event is especially targeted to the medical and legal fraternity; the judiciary; NGO’s with Human Rights interests; senior security and law enforcement personnel, government representatives, policy developers, medical and law students. The public is also invited to attend.
