Memorial Service for the First UWI,Mona Director of Sports

A memorial service for the late Olympian, Keith A. Gardner O.D. will be held on Monday, June 25, 2012, at the University Chapel, beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Mr. Gardner was the first Director of Sports at The UWI, Mona Campus.

He came to the Mona Campus after a short career as an athlete during which he took on the world of track and field,   conquering it time and again as evidenced by his records and gold medals obtained at the 1954 and 1958 Commonwealth Games and his bronze medal in the 1960 Olympic Games. Indeed, he was the only Jamaican athlete to have won four medals at a single Commonwealth Games. On completion of his track career, he coached Excelsior High School before joining The UWI, Mona family.

One of his most significant contributions at the Mona Campus was the establishment of the Intercampus games in 1965 which brought together the three campuses to compete in Cricket, Track & Field, Football and Netball. Mr. Gardner was also the recipient of the two awards from the UWI Invitational Track Meet: one as the UWI representative and another as an Olympian who contributed significantly to the development of Jamaica’s track & field.

He passed away peacefully in New Jersey, USA on May 25, 2012 at the age of 82 years.
