William Dennis Lecture Explores DNA in Medicine, Biotechnology and Science in Jamaica

“Exploring DNA in Medicine, Biotechnology and Science” is the title of the Eleventh William Dennis Memorial lecture. Professor Wayne McLaughlin, Head, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies, Mona will deliver the Lecture.  The event takes place on Thursday July 19, 2012 at 5:00 pm at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, University Hospital of the West Indies.

The discovery of DNA in 1953 by Watson and Crick is said to be most important discovery of the 20th century. This discovery as well as knowledge of its structure spawned a new era of molecular biology including identification of genes that trigger major diseases, drug manufacture to treat devastating illnesses, genetic engineering in plants leading to disease resistant strains and increased crop yields.

The use of DNA in paternity testing and in the courts of law has brought home scientific developments to the common man.

Professor McLaughlin will share the newest applications in DNA technology and its particular relevance to Jamaican society and its justice system. This lecture will also look at DNA’s origin and its wider role in evolution.

Wayne McLaughlin is a Silver Musgrave Medal Awardee from the Institute of Jamaica and is also Gleaner Scientist of the Year Award winner.
