Oxford Honours Vice Chancellor

UWI Vice Chancellor, Professor the Honourable Rex Nettleford, was yesterday, July 3 conferred with the Doctor of Civil Law degree, Honoris Causa from the University of Oxford at a special convocation in the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford. In the citation to the Vice Chancellor, he was lauded as "a man of great versatility, effective in action, outstanding in erudition and most supple in dance". It noted that he is "unmatched in the learning and acuteness of his understanding of the lives of his people". Professor Nettleford is the third West Indian to be so honoured. The other two are Vice Chancellor Sir Shridath Ramphal and former Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, the late Dr. Eric Williams. Vice Chancellor Nettleford, who attended Oxford University (at Oriel College) as a Rhodes Scholar, was named an Honorary Fellow of Oriel College in 1998. Two other Jamaicans have been so honoured – former Rhodes Scholar and Jamaica Premier, National Hero, The Right Excellent Norman W. Manley, who was an Honorary Fellow of Jesus College and the late Dr. Cicely Williams, who was named an Honorary Fellow of Somerville College in 1977 and of Green College in 1984.
