Professor Emeritus "George" Sidrak

The University Of The West Indies, Mona Campus has learned with regret of the passing of Professor Emeritus Girgis Hanna ‘George’ Sidrak, in the United Kingdom on Saturday, June 28, 2003. Professor Sidrak gave distinguished service to the university for some thirty-six years between 1960 and 1996, both as an academic and administrator. He was at various times, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Professor of Botany, Head of Department, Vice Dean and Dean of the then Faculty of Natural Sciences, Acting Vice Chancellor, Chairman of the Examination Review Board, the Housing Committee, the Housing Loan Committee, among others. Over the years, Professor Sidrak made original contributions to knowledge in the areas of Physiology, Plant Ecology, Economic Botany, Crop Physiology and Radiation Botany. He guided several candidates to higher degrees and published in scientific journals in his field. He is also remembered for his pioneering work on the University’s water recycling project, resulting in the establishment of a small lake at the entrance to the Mona Campus. The technology used in that project was later put to good use for a similar project in the Portmore area. Professor Sidrak also had an excellent record of public service, serving on the boards of institutions such as Overseas Examinations, the Institute of Jamaica, the College of Agriculture and the Scientific Research Council. The University community extends sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
