The Electronic Media & Child Health

Research conducted by Senior Lecturer in the Department of Child Health, Dr. Maureen Samms-Vaughan is being used by the Broadcasting Commission to develop an information campaign on the role of the electronic media in child health and development. The campaign is meant to raise the awareness of parents, guardians, children and the teaching community about the Children’s Code for Programming and about the effects of electronic media on children’s learning and Behaviour. The campaign cites the findings of Dr. Samms-Vaughan’s research work "Cognition, Educational Attainment and Behaviour in a Cohort of Jamaican Children" which takes account of the role of the electronic media in child health and development. The research showed that excessive viewing of television over 20 hours per week at ages 11 – 12 years is associated with reduced school performance. Viewing of certain programmes, for example soap operas by girls, and action shows by boys, resulted in increased aggressive behaviour. As part of the campaign, the Broadcasting Commission will be using the school system to distribute a flyer to parents and guardians across Jamaica. The flyer will be issued along with the school reports of children in primary and secondary level schools so that the link will be made between children’s school performance and their media habits.
