International Summer School Programme
Six international students are now completing an international summer school programme offered at UWI Mona. Organized by the Office of Administration and Special Initiatives, the summer school this year offers students the opportunity to participate in a course called Caribbean Culture and Society from July 14 to August 2. Three of the students are from the Clark Atlanta University in Georgia; two are from the University of Memphis while one is from the Bahamas. The students from Clark Atlanta are accompanied by Professor James McJunkins. The course, taught by Dr. Clinton Hutton, Lecturer in the Faculty of Social Sciences, exposes the students to the peoples and cultures of the Caribbean and explores the cultural, philosophical and psychological foundations of Caribbean culture and society. It also examines the religious, philosophical, political, entrepreneurial and artistic expressions of the people. Students not only attend lectures but also participate in field trips and activities that immerse them in Jamaica’s culture as a means of introducing them to its history, tradition and performing arts. The students sit an examination at the end of the course and if needed, receive credits towards their university degree. They are also required to submit an academic journal.
