The Department of Advanced Nursing Education

The Department of Advanced Nursing Education hosted a workshop and related activities, from July 23 to August 1, aimed at assessing its capacity to educate and train Caribbean nurses at the undergraduate and graduate levels via distance mode. The workshop was organised based on a proposal submitted by Dr. Hermi Hewitt, Head of the Department at the CARICOM/PAHO/ Canadian Partnership in Health and Human Resource and Nursing Workforce forum convened in Barbados, November 2002. Dr. Hewitt, Coordinator of the workshop, and Dr. Joy Branch, Distance Education Consultant, Athabasca University, Canada made presentations on Managed Migration and Distance Education respectively. A team from Mona Information Technology Services demonstrated a distance education session. Participants from Caribbean schools of nursing and some clinical agencies learnt about the technological infrastructure at the Mona Campus and the overall distance education plan for the Department’s programmes. Topics discussed included future distance education plans, support, collaboration strategies, harmonizing of the Bachelor of Nursing curriculum and the roles of future nursing leaders and schools of nursing in implementing distance education. Participants were from the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. Funding was provided by Health Canada through PAHO/WHO.
