The Jamaican Language Schools Literary Competition

The UWI’s Planning Unit for Jamaican Language, the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy in collaboration with the Department of Literatures in English will launch the Jamaican Language Schools Literary Competition in recognition of the life and work of the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley (Miss Lou), on Wednesday, August 13 at 11:00 a.m. at the Undercroft, UWI Mona. This competition will be run nationally and will be open to school children of Grades 5 and 6 right across Jamaica. It will be an annual event, beginning in the academic year 2003-04. The competition will have two categories, one for poetry and one for prose. The aim is to promote creative writing amongst children of primary school age in the Jamaican language, using a standard writing system, the Cassidy Orthography. The Planning Unit will be working with teachers in schools across Jamaica to familiarize them with the Cassidy Orthography so that entries can be submitted in the appropriate form.
