Caribbean Childhood: From Research to Action
The Children’s Issues Coalition of the University of the West Indies (Mona) announces the launch of its inaugural volume of its new Journal, Caribbean Childhoods: From Research to Action. The launch will be held on Monday, October 6 at 5:00 p.m. at the Caribbean Child Development Centre, located at the Mona Bowl. Professor Elsa Leo Rhynie, convenor of the Children’s Issues Coalition, will chair the launch. Robert Gregory, Executive Director of the HEART National Training Agency, will be guest speaker, and the Caribbean Youth Orchestra will perform.
The theme of the first volume is Contemporary Issues in Early Childhood. The articles and study reviews in this volume are presented from an interdisciplinary perspective, integrating the health, development, behaviour and education issues in the lives of our youngest Caribbean citizens. The Journal’s focus is
deliberately on linking research and action, seeking to bring about change at different levels and in different ways – in policy making, in strategies of intervention, in education, parenting and care giving. The Children’s Issues Coalition comprises academics and practitioners with an interest in translating research on a range of children’s issues into effective policies and interventions. Co-editors of Volume one are Janet Brown and Rose Davies and authors include Elsa Leo-Rhynie, Julie Meeks Gardner, Christine Powell, Susan Walker, Rose Davies, Kerida Carpenter, Maureen Samms-Vaughan, Sian Williams, Janet Brown, Kerida Scott McDonald, Bridgette Matthies, and Heather Ricketts. Ian Randle Publishers has produced the Journal; publication of Volume One has been funded by UNICEF.
