The School of Continuing Studies (SCS), University of the West Indies has developed two short courses in Mathematics and English. These courses are aimed at adult learners who are preparing to pursue tertiary level studies, but who have some crucial shortfalls in their qualifications for matriculation.
Designed primarily for persons over 21 years of age across the Caribbean, who wish to improve their academic credentials, these courses are scheduled to begin on October 6 in Antigua and Barbuda, Belize , the British Virgins Islands, Dominica, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The courses are planned around a 13-week schedule and will be offered from selected sites of the SCS on a flexible year-round basis.
The English course, entitled, English for Tertiary Level Study, will assist those students who need to prepare for the UWI’s English Language Proficiency Test. Developed through a partnership with the Department of Language, Literature and Philosophy at Mona, the SCS hopes that this proficiency course
will focus on enhancing the basic competencies of students in the comprehension and expression in English.
Additionally, in response to numerous requests and increasing demand from around the region to improve competencies in mathematics, the SCS is also introducing a special course called Mathematics: A Gentle Introduction. Designed for adult students who wish to refresh their mathematical knowledge before taking a pre-requisite mathematics course for University study, this course will review multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and percentages, operations with zero and negative numbers, statistical, graphical, algebraic and numerical concepts and techniques and look at the interpretation of the slopes of graphs.
