International Vaccine Trial
The UWI’s Vaccines Infectious Diseases Centre has now enrolled more than 1000 babies in the local leg of an International Vaccine Trial to test a new vaccine designed to protect babies against the rotavirus which causes gastroenteritis. Jamaica is one of 12 countries testing the vaccine and over 56,000 infants have been enrolled worldwide. The local trials are being conducted by a team headed by Professor of Paediatrics at the UWI, Dr Celia Christie who says the exercise has been going well. Infants born at the University Hospital of the West Indies who are 6 to 12 weeks old are eligible to participate in the trials. The local and international trials have been endorsed by the US Food and Drug Administration, the Jamaican Ministry of Health and the University and University Hospital’s ethics committee.
