The Publications Section of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies is pleased to announce the publication of Erna Brodber’s book Standing Tall: Affirmations of the Jamaican Male – 24 Self-Portraits.
Standing Tall consists of narrative self-portraits presenting the life stories of 24 Jamaican men born at the turn of the 20th century. Each one describes the unique circumstances, fortunes and hardships that shaped each individual life, yet all paint an overwhelming picture of industrious, resilient, family-oriented manhood – thereby giving the lie to the commonly held stereotype of the irresponsible Jamaican male.
The book features a foreword by Professor Barry Chevannes and an introduction by the late George Beckford. The book will be launched on Wednesday, October 22 at 6:00 pm, at the Undercroft of the Senate Building, Mona Campus. Guest speaker will be the Hon. Maxine Henry-Wison, Minister of Education, Youth and Culture. The public is invited.
