UWI Professor to Address African Ministers
Alcan Professor of Caribbean Sustainable Development at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Professor Anthony Clayton, will deliver a keynote presentation at the Inaugural African Ministerial Conference on Science and Technology for Development to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa from November 4 - 7. The conference, the first of its kind, will bring together the Ministers for Science and Technology and their key technical support staff from across Africa.
Professor Clayton has been asked to brief the assembled African Ministers of Government on a new model of development planning called ‘foresighting for development’ (F4D) which he and his team devised. The F4D model is designed to help countries assess the important factors in their internal and external environment, identify areas of potential competitive advantage and plan their strategies for science, technology, innovation and national development.
The November meeting is being organized by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). NEPAD represents a commitment by the new generation of African leaders to finally solve Africa’s daunting problems and place the entire African continent on a path of lasting growth and development. The African leaders recognize that their plans for Africa's economic recovery depend on science and technology, and established the African Forum on Science and Technology for Development (AFSTD) to host the November meeting.
