Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Established
The UWI Institute for Hospitality and Tourism, which was formally approved in May 2003, has now been established with a network of four coordinators. The Institute will draw on university-wide support, especially the Faculty of Social Sciences, to carry out research, conduct post-graduate seminars, workshops. It will also respond to requests from governments, the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, the Caribbean Hotels Association and other relevant bodies for research into particular issues. The establishment of the Institute was a recommendation arising from a thorough review of tourism programmes spearheaded by the UWI and including representatives of all stakeholder groups in tourism. Already it has developed a website dedicated to community tourism, at the request of the Caribbean project for economic competitiveness. The Institute’s centre coordinator is Mrs. Carolyn Hayle, who is based at Mona, in the School for Graduate Studies and Research.
