Congress on Disasters

Three UWI Mona academics attended the Sixth International Congress on Disasters and the Second International Seminar on Risk Management held in Havana, Cuba, November 24 to 28, 2003. They are Dr. Angela Gordon Stair, Counselling Psychologist, UWI Counselling Service, Dr. Audrey Pottinger, Clinical Psychologist, Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health and Miss Beverley Lashley, Librarian and Coordinator, Caribbean Disaster Information Network (CARDIN). Presentations covered all types of disasters including natural, chemical/biological and infectious diseases in humans and animals. The focus was on using all institutions including educational institutions and health care facilities to educate and involve communities in disaster prevention, mitigation, and management. Miss Lashley presented a paper on the work of CARDIN, a project based in the Science Library, which involves the collation and dissemination of research on all aspects of disasters and disaster management in the Caribbean. Dr. Gordon Stair’s presentation was on the disaster mental health and support services carried out by the Jamaica Red Cross. Dr. Stair and Dr. Pottinger are both volunteers with this programme.
