Fulbright Scholar for New CARIMAC Masters Programme

Dan Berkowitz, Associate, Professor of Journalism in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will spend three weeks in February helping to launch a new graduate programme in communications at UWI Mona funded by a Fulbright Senior Specialists grant. Dr. Berkowitz will travel to CARIMAC, where former University of Iowa graduate Dr. Nancy Muturi is coordinating a new master's degree programme in Communications for Social and Behavioural Change. Dr. Muturi, who earned both a Master's in Third-World Development Support and a Doctorate in Journalism and Mass Communication at that University, requested Berkowitz's assistance through the Fulbright programme. He will work with faculty members teaching courses in theory and in research methods, meet with students who are forming a chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of Jamaica, and consult formally and informally with the institute's faculty. Plans are in the works for Berkowitz to return to Jamaica in June for an additional two weeks of consulting. The Fulbright Scholar Program is sponsored by the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and managed by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. The programme's purpose is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
