University of the West Indies Press Wins Book Industry of Ja. Awards

Congratulations to the University of the West Indies Press which received several awards at the Book Industry Association of Jamaica’s Biennial Awards Dinner held on Saturday, May 1 in Kingston. Central Africa in the Caribbean: Transcending Time, Transforming Culture by Maureen Warner-Lewis, received the award for the Best Academic Book published between July 1, 2002 and December 30, 2003. Three Press employees, Nadine Buckland, Shivaun Hearne and Richard Smith also received Long-Service Awards from the Association. The University of the West Indies Press received the BIAJ Trailblazer Award for operating a successful enterprise, for demonstrating innovation, and for making a significant contribution to the industry through the Book Industry Association of Jamaica. This year the award was given to an organization rather than to an individual and reflects the cumulative achievements of authors, administrators, Press boards, manuscript committees, employees, editors, designers, and printers. Professor Trevor Munroe of the Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI was the keynote speaker at the event.
