Commemoration Celebrations
The UWI, Mona Campus is once again organising celebrations to commemorate the founding of the Institution. The celebrations will take place over the period Friday, February 13 to Saturday, February 21. The honoree this year will be the Vice Chancellor, Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford. The celebrations begin with a Flag Raising Ceremony & University Parade on February 13 at 9:00 a.m. The parade, involving staff, students and alumni of the UWI, will begin at 8 .45 a.m. at the University Chapel. The guest speaker will be poet and retired UWI Public Orator, Professor Edward Baugh. The opening ceremony will be followed immediately by Caribbean Day in the area facing the Undercroft.
This year the UWI Alumni Association (Jamaica Branch) has joined forces with the Institution and will observe Alumni Week during the Commemoration Celebrations. The Association will therefore present its Annual Pelican Award to outstanding UWI Alumnus, Professor Orlando Patterson of Harvard University at the Commemoration Concert on Sunday, February 15 at 6:00 p.m. The Annual Commemoration Fete will take place on Saturday, February 14, Valentine’s Day at the Students Union at Mona. Music will be provided by Peter Philips and Bass XS Discos. A Dinner/Dance to honour Professor Nettleford will be held at the Mona Visitors Lodge and Conference Centre on Friday, February 20.
