The Julien Fedon Memorial Prize

The UWI School of Continuing Studies – Grenada Centre and the Institute for People’s Enlightenment in Grenada are inviting applications for the annual Julien Fedon Memorial Prize for outstanding work by UWI students in History. The student must be from one of the countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). This student may be either at the Bachelors or Post Graduate level from any UWI campus. The owner of one of Grenada’s largest estates and owner of about 100 slaves in 1795, Julien Fedon abandoned his life as a slave owner to become leader of a movement to destroy the institution of chattel slavery and to free Grenada from British rule. The objective of the Julien Fedon Memorial Prize is to increase the awareness among Grenadians and people of the region of Fedon’s contribution to his homeland and the region. The winner of the prize will receive a cash award of 501 British pounds and will receive the award at the annual Julien Fedon Lecture to be held in April in Grenada.
