CARIMAC Student Spearheads Basic School Project

After more than thirty years, infants at the Ashley All Age & Infant School in Mocho, Clarendon, will finally receive a new toilet facility more suitable for them. The ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the facility was held at the school on March 31, 2004. The facility will comprise two toilet areas, as well as a shower area and is geared towards improving the sanitary conditions at the school. The project is being coordinated by final year CARIMAC student, and resident of the Ashley community, La Donna Manning as part of the Communication Analysis and Planning (CAP 11) course. Apart from building the physical structure, the project also includes an educational component whereby the entire student population is being taught about the importance of proper sanitation and hygiene. The educational aspect of the project comprised health seminars conducted by volunteers of the Public Health Department, May Pen and interactive learning facilitated via a poster competition in which students emphasize through art, the importance of sanitation and hygiene. The distribution of reading materials donated by UNICEF will be done as the last leg of this aspect of the project for the school term. The project has so far received sponsorship from the Caribbean Cement Company, Super Plus Food Stores, Epic Hardware & Construction Limited, Tile City & Home Centre, H.B Stone & Sand, George Kirby’s Hardware; Shagourg’s Vibrated Block and Crushed Stones Industry, Century Elson Jamaica Ltd., Rapid Sheffield, LASCO Distributors. The Ministry of Education assisted in providing the architectural design and technical advice for construction of the facility.
