Faculty of Medical Sciences Forum on Aging
The Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Research and Policy Group, Mona School of Business, UWI Mona, will host a public forum on Aging on Wednesday, April 21 starting at 6:00 p.m. The venue is the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre on the Mona Campus. The theme for the forum is Challenges and Responses to Aging in the Caribbean. The forum is being held against the background of an aging world population due to advances in social conditions and the provision of better health care. The countries of the developing world will be most affected by this shift in the demography of countries as more seniors live longer, more return to reside and younger persons migrate to the developed countries. The objectives of the forum are to enlighten the public on the issues which will face Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean with regard to the expected aging of the population and to highlight the UWI’s response to this demographic shift especially with respect to research, teaching, informing policy and the provision of services in partnership with the government of Jamaica and private enterprise. Presenters will include Dr. Denise Eldermire Shearer, Coordinator of the World Health Organisation Centre on Aging and Health, Jamaica. She will speak on Changing the Global Demographics and Challenges of Aging in Developing Countries. Dr. Rosemarie Wright Pascoe, Snr. Lecturer and Consultant Endocrinologist, UWI, Mona will speak on Lifestyle Approach to Aging Well; while Dr. Karen Lewis-Bell, Director of Family Health Services in the Ministry of Health will focus on The Ministry of Health’s Response: Age Friendly Guidelines. Mr. Alvin McIntosh, of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security will address Pension and Social Security Issues for Seniors, while Professor Owen Morgan, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences will speak on Curriculum Changes in the Faculty of Medical Sciences. The forum will end with an address by the Principal of the Mona Campus, Professor Kenneth Hall who will speak on The UWI’s Response
