Dr. Wen-Bin Zhang Promoted to Professor
The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Wen-Bin Zhang, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, Mona Campus to the rank of Professor, with effect from February 4, 2004.
Professor Zhang holds the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Mathematics and the Master of Science degree in Statistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as a Diploma, equivalent to a Master of Science in Mathematics, from Peking University in China.
He joined the staff of the UWI in 1993 as a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1997. Prior to joining the staff, he served as Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the United States of America. He was also Professor at South China University of Technology and Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Austin.
Professor Zhang has considerable experience as an academic, having taught at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is considered one of the top experts in the field of abstract analytic number theory. Number theory is one of the oldest and largest branches of pure mathematics, sometimes called ‘higher mathematics’. It involves the study of the properties of whole numbers and fractions. Analytic number theory is the branch of number theory which uses real and complex analysis to investigate various deep properties of integers and prime numbers.
