DLIS Course - Creating an Index using Microsoft Word XP
The Department of Library and Information Studies, University of the West Indies will host the four hour course, Creating an Index using Microsoft Word XP from June 14-15 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each day. The venue for the course is the Department’s Computer Lab, DLIS and the cost is $1,000. The objective of the hands-on workshop is to teach participants how to create an index for a Microsoft Word document using the built-in indexing features of Microsoft Word XP. Participants must know the basics of, and regularly use MS Word as their word processing software. They must also understand the concept of indexing and must be familiar with basic indexing techniques. The workshop will cover a variety of topics including how to create a basic index entry, how to generate an index from the index entries, formatting the index entries, and formatting the index. Participants will also learn how to create see and see also entries and sub-entries, specifying a page range for an index entry using bookmarks and updating the index. Other topics are how to unmark an index entry, using a concordance file to create an index, creating an index that spans more than one document and creating multiple indexes in a single document. Participants will do exercises to reinforce what was taught and to determine areas which may need additional instruction.
