Ruby Yorke

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus has learned with regret of the passing of Ruby Yorke, former Director of the Regional Preschool Child Development Centre (now Caribbean Child Development Centre CCDC). Ruby Yorke was well known and respected throughout the Caribbean for the passion she demonstrated toward the “early childhood cause.” She was outspoken about early childhood issues in the Caribbean, especially those that gave her cause for concern. Ms. Yorke devoted many years of her life to the development of the early childhood system in her native St. Lucia before assuming the directorship of the RPCDC in Jamaica. She applied herself to the task with equal enthusiasm and the resource materials that were produced by the Centre under her watch, are still in use today in many Caribbean countries. Even in retirement, Ms. Yorke could not easily say “no” to the many requests for help she received from colleagues in the ECD field. She was visibly committed to the cause even up to the time of her illness and death. The Caribbean early childhood community mourns her loss and recognize and pay tribute to her sterling contribution to the field of early childhood development in the Caribbean. May her soul rest in peace.
